DUAL ANALOG DELAY LINE - BUCKET BRIGADE DEVICE (BBD)

Legendary and rare Reticon SAD 1024A / SAD1024A / Reticon 1024A 1K SAD1024-type dual-512 bucket brigade analog delay line (BBD - Bucket Brigade Device). Why they no longer make this extremely useful analog IC (and the SAD512 and SAD2048) is a mystery to us! The SAD1024A is getting very hard to find these days. Note, this is an ANALOG DELAY LINE IC - it is NOT a relatively inexpensive digital delay line IC. Great for generating audio special effects / music special effects / sound special effects, such as echos, reverberations and sum-and-difference frequences / comb filter / flanger / phaser effects, to give music and sounds more depth, character, uniqueness and richness, and for special audio effects / special music effects / special sound effects. Other applications include voice control of tape recorders to prevent loss of initial sounds (real time voice triggers the recorder's ON/OFF control while also being recorded by the SAD1024A ICs; then after tape recorder starts recording, the delayed sound from the last SAD1024A stage output comes through and you miss nothing), variable signal control of amplitude or of equalization filters, tremolo, vibrato and chorus effects in electronic musical instruments, variable or fixed delay of analog signals, time compression of recorder and telephone conversations or other analog signals (for example, to minimize dead periods that only waste listening time), music and audio sampling systems, and for the ever-popular voice scrambling and voice encoding systems. SAD1024A ICs can be cascaded together to increase delays and to tap off of intermediate points to increase delay or resolution. Clock rate may be as high as 1.5MHz. Input signal frequency can be more than 200KHz, so the SAD1024A's usefulness extends well into the ultrasound (ultrasonic) / sonar bands, and handles treble frequencies nicely. Much easier, faster, cheaper and compact to implement than ADC-to-DAC digital methods, and some audiophiles say that the results are much more natural-sounding than digitized music. SAD1024A & SAD512D CONVERSIONS: Do you need SAD1024A ICs? If you can't expand the space or wiring on your circuit board to accommodate two SAD512 ICs, and you have the physical room on your PC board to stack two SAD512 ICs, with a little wiring finagling you can relatively easily wire in two SAD512 ICs to do the function of one SAD 1024. Similarly, one of these Reticon SAD512 ICs can be wired to fit into an 8-pin Reticon SAD512D Music IC (we are looking for Reticon SAD 512D ICs to sell, but are unable to find them so far; if you have Reticon SAD512D ICs to sell, please let us know).

With the TA8184 and handful of external components, you easily control the audio Bass, Treble, Balance and Volume from 20 Hz to well within the ultrasound band for one or two channels (most other audio ICs are limited to audio band). Great for hi-fi and stereo designs as expected, but my main use of them is in the design of analog voice disguisers, subliminal mixers/amplifiers, and binaural beats devices (all of which the TA8184 is virtually unbeatable!), and for low-band ultrasonic designs, sonar designs, and lowpass, bandpass, highpass and notch filter designs.

In analog voice disguiser applications, the Bass and Treble controls are used individually or together in a single-channel or dual-channel system to contour voice or sound to sound much more high-pitched or low-pitched than what the voice normally sounds like, while sounding more natural than digital voice disguisers. When the Bass and Treble controls are used together on their far settings, substantial distortion of the voice occurs in voices and sounds rich in frequency content. The TA8184 is great for doing audio special effects works of various kinds, for adding unusual sound effects, and for producing special voices for games and magic tricks.

The TA 8184 IC is also virtually unbeatable for subliminal mixer and amplifier applications. One channel is used for the main audio, and the other channel is used for the much less volume subliminal audio (or low-band subliminal ultrasound), both TA8184 channel outputs are then sent to the mixer stage (usually consists of a differential amplifier (not included) to produce the composite signal output). Since changes in the Treble Control, Bass Control and Volume Control are equal in direction and degree for both main audio and subliminal channels, the subliminal signal always tracks in the same tone and volume direction and degree as the main audio, thereby the subliminal audio remaining much better hidden in the composite signal regardless of changes in Bass, Treble or Volume by the user. And for subliminal applications, the Balance Control is especially nice in controlling the relative percentages of main audio and subliminal audio in the composite signal, thereby allowing you to carefully adjust the Balance Control so that the subliminal signal remains just below conscious threshhold through a wide-range of relative differences in main audio and subliminal audio input volumes.

The TA8184 IC is the binaural beats IC. CMOS low power - equivalent power dissipation to the CMOS CD4047 (similar to the 7555 and more versatile but at the cost of 6 more pins and higher price, see this webpage). One big disadvantage with the LM555 is that it produces large crowbar currents in the output driver, resulting in big supply current spikes of 300ma - 400ma each time it switches, whereas the 7555 produces only 2ma - 3ma current spikes, and often saves one bus decoupling capacitor near it - usually required for the 555.

(2) Much higher bandwidth. The 555 is limited to about 300 KHz. With the CMOS 7555, you get BW of 500 KHz (2 MHz with the CD4047).

(3) The output timing and pulse widths are substantially more precise using the 7555 over the 555, especially if the power supply is anemic.

(4) Because the input impedance of the 7555 is very high, you also seldom need a decoupling capacitor at the Control Voltage terminal (Pin 5), thus saving you yet another capacitor.

The 7555/555 applications are legendary and virtually unlimited, and include: (1) Frequency multiplication, (2) Frequency division, (3) Envelope detection (e.g. amplitude modulation - AM demodulation), (4) Frequency discrimination, (5) Timing circuits / Time delay circuits. One big disadvantage with the LM555 is that it produces large crowbar currents in the output driver, resulting in supply current spikes of 300ma to 400ma when it switches, whereas the 4047 produces only 2ma - 3ma current spikes.

(2) Much higher bandwidth. 555 is limited to about 300 KHz. With the 4047, you get BW up to about 2 MHz (15+VDC supply).

(3) A + Trigger pin as well as a - Trigger pin. 555 has only a - Trigger pin.

(5) The normal Output pin plus the Complement Output pin. The 555 has only the normal Output pin. Complementary outputs much simplify switching, logic, push-pull and communications designs.

(7) Two Astable Inputs - one requiring positive voltage, the other requiring negative voltage to trigger Astable operation, else its Monostable. With the 555, to go from Astable to Monostable operation or vice-versa, you have to re-wire the timing circuitry by adding or removing a resistor. With the 4047, the timing circuitry conveniently stays the same; you just simply change the Astable or Not-Astable inputs.

For multivibrator versatility, you can't beat the 4047 CMOS. Because of these extra, often critical, advantages over the common 555, the 4047's multivibrator applications are virtually unlimited, and include: (1) Frequency multiplication, (2) Frequency division, (3) Envelope detection (e.g. amplitude modulation - AM demodulation), (4) Frequency discrimination, (5) Timing circuits / Time delay circuits.
