The ICL 7126 is commonly used to drive digital meter displays, and is usually socket-mounted. In fact, if your meter breaks on you - the display suddenly displays gibberish or not at all - in many cases, the ICL 7126 IC is zapped, and by keeping spares around, you can often easily repair your meter by simply replacing the ICL7126 IC. Note that the ICL7126RCPL is a mirror image of the ICL7126CPL (the "R" means "reversed" pins) for every pin, including Vcc and Gnd. Efficient and parts stingy - eliminates need for output resistors and complex control circuitry. The LM3914 operates from a power supplies of 3VDC or less upto 25VDC, and with ±3 volts to ±35 volts inputs. These very versatile LM3914-type display drivers illuminate the kinds of varying-length LED displays (or low-current incandescent lamps, LCD displays or vacuum fluorescent displays, and are also both TTL and CMOS compatible). LM3914 ICs are commonly used to visually display audio sound volumes, scanner signal strengths, detector signal strengths, analog meter voltage levels, visual alarms, scale readings, and for controlling sequencers, programmers, staging control systems, etc. All outputs are individual current regulated up to 30ma, and open collector (1,365 mW max total dissipation). (6) On the customer side of the 1060, between the tip and ring is wired in series a 1N4007 rectifier (cathode towards Tip), a 20V zener diode (anode towards tip), and a 157 Kohm resistor; this circuit is active only when reverse polarity is applied to the tip and ring lines, and is used to diagnose this condition.

The LB 1060 IC is the heart of each Northern Telecom 2960L4 Interface (NT 2960 Interface), which circuit is basically described above, all together in one epoxy block. To remove the 1060 from the Northern Telecom 2960 Interface block requires considerable work with epoxy solvent and/or dental picks - much easier and safer to just buy the 1060s from me!

Each bilateral switch snaps ON when the teleco line voltage is present and exceeds 17 Volts (Off Hook condition), and snaps OFF when its current drops under 3 ma (On Hook condition. When ON, each of the 20uf and 150ohm circuits are bypassed. Because of this automatic switching due to certain voltage and current conditions and the fact that the 1060 can take much higher voltages than common bilateral switches, the 1060 cannot be directly replaced by other bilateral switches, such as the CMOS 4016 (e.g. CD4016B, MC14016B) and the CMOS 4066 (e.g. CD4066B, MC14066B), both of which require additional wiring and parts to emulate the 1060 but even so are still limited to relatively low voltages.

The AT&T LB1060AB was originally priced at about $4.40 each - even then they were reputedly highly restricted for teleco uses only. Highly restricted probably because the AT&T 1060 is cherished by phone phreakers because they could (and still) can interface many different types of circuits to phone lines for their various phone color box applications and experiments, and other phone interface circuits.
