The very popular, useful and versatile 40014 CMOS IC is a low dissipation Schmitt Trigger IC that should meet your schmitt trigger and inverter digital needs. With a schmitt trigger, output switching is usually much cleaner in an electrically noisy environment than using an ordinary gate, making them particularly useful for pulse shaping, sine-to-square wave conversions, monostable multivibrators and astable multivibrators. A common problem encountered with ordinary non-Schmitt Trigger inverters with less than very fast rise times and very fast fall times (e.g. sinewave inputs) is that at about 1/2 Vcc input voltage enough uncertainty can exist that the inverter switches several times during input signal rise and fall around this voltage level, resulting in a noisy output. The HCF4014BE CMOS ICs are equivalent to the CD4014 / CD4014B, MC14014 / MC14014B, SGS4014 / SGS4014B, HCF4014 / HCF4014B, HEF4014 / HEF4014B, TC4014 / TC4014B and other CMOS 4014 equivalent ICs.

The 4014 static shift registers have many electronic uses! The 4014 is typically used for synchronous parallel input or synchronous serial input / serial output data queueing, parallel-to-serial conversions, delay lines, frequency dividers, and general purpose register designs. 4014 shift register ICs are really neat for designing sound effects generators (e.g. sirens, warblers, chirpers, etc.), light effects generators (e.g. "flickering flame" electric lights), random number generators, pseudorandom number generators, random noise generators (e.g. white noise, pink noise), delay lines, and theremins (i.e. science fiction movies / horror movies eerie special sound effects) of many different types using its very advantageous parallel and serial inputs. Its special effects light flickerer applications are great for Christmas decorations/displays, fake fireplaces, horror houses, school science projects, romantic settings, toys, games, gadgets, etc., making it a favorite IC for crafts as well.

Random noise generators and random light generators are also very useful for fooling potential burglars and home invaders by randomly generating sounds and/or lights just like people would do if present there at the time, and the 4014 can be coupled with ultrasonics to produce pest controllers that because of the unpredictability of the random nature of the sound bursts and/or light flashes, it is almost impossible for pests to anticipate and get used to - much better than the commercial ultrasonic pest controllers that periodically transmit a short "ultrasonic" beep (actually, about 15 KHz, which just borders on the ultrasonic) which pests soon get used to.

I both design and collect sound effects and light effects circuits, including theremin circuits, so if you have any circuit designs you would like to share with us or know of a good website or book that has these circuits, please let us know.

The 4014 also has great music applications (e.g. echo, distortion, eerie effects, background noises, editing, etc.). 4014s can be expanded by cascading to produce static shift registers much larger than 8-stage with expanded parallel inputs for high-resolution applications way beyond the 8-bits parallel input of a single 4014. Use a RAM, ROM, FPGA or other programmable memory (not included) to dump your sound or light program into the 4014 and then shift it out serially, with the option of adding your own changes, deletions and additions editing along the way.

We have a ton of these 4014s, but being one of my favorite ICs we use a lot of them, so future availability is not guaranteed. Harris Semiconductor 4047 CMOS multivibrator ICs, equivalent to CD4047 / CD4047B, MC14047 / MC14047B, HEF4047 / HEF4047B, HCF4047 / HCF4047B, SGS4047 / SGS4047B, TC4047 / TC4047B and other CMOS timer and multivibrator equivalents. Astable multivibrators often serve as the heartbeat of a circuit, it almost always pays when it is as precise and as versatile as possible.

The versatile 8-pin 555-series multivibrator ICs (LM 555 / NE 555) are probably the most popular ICs ever made. Unfortunately, not enough designers know the true power of the 14-pin CD 4047 timer / multivibrator IC! For a measely extra 3-pins on each side, here is the sizzling steak you get when you use the CMOS 4047 over the ground-round of the 555:

CMOS low power - on level with CMOS 555 ICs (ICM7555, LMC555, GLC555, TLC555, LM7555). One big disadvantage with the LM555 is that it produces large crowbar currents in the output driver, resulting in supply current spikes of 300ma to 400ma when it switches, whereas the 4047 produces only 2ma - 3ma current spikes.

(2) Much higher bandwidth. 555 is limited to about 300 KHz. With the 4047, you get BW up to about 2 MHz (15+VDC supply).

(3) A + Trigger pin as well as a - Trigger pin. 555 has only a - Trigger pin.

(5) The normal Output pin plus the Complement Output pin. The 555 has only the normal Output pin. Complementary outputs much simplify switching, logic, push-pull and communications designs.

(7) Two Astable Inputs - one requiring positive voltage, the other requiring negative voltage to trigger Astable operation, else its Monostable. With the 555, to go from Astable to Monostable operation or vice-versa, you have to re-wire the timing circuitry by adding or removing a resistor. With the 4047, the timing circuitry conveniently stays the same; you just simply change the Astable or Not-Astable inputs.

For multivibrator versatility, you can't beat the 4047 CMOS. Because of these extra, often critical, advantages over the common 555, the 4047's multivibrator applications are virtually unlimited, and include: (1) Frequency multiplication, (2) Frequency division, (3) Envelope detection (e.g. amplitude modulation - AM demodulation), (4) Frequency discrimination, (5) Timing circuits / Time delay circuits. We use these standard ICs by the ton, but we purchased so many that we are selling some now.ICs come in anti-static tube.

All together, the 4053 can replicate an incredible 18 different toggle switch, pushbutton switch and relay functions (SPST, DPST, 3PST, SPDT, DPDT, 3PDT, SPDT-CO, DPDT-CO, 3PDT-CO, SPST-MON, DPST-MON, 3PST-MON, SPST-MOFF, DPST-MOFF, 3PST-MOFF, SPDT-MON/MOFF, DPDT-MON/MOFF, and 3PDT-MON/MOFF)! The CD40105 has asynchronous inputs and outputs, and 3-state outputs. Input and output data can be shifted at different rates. In other words, you load in your data at one rate, and then as you require, you peel off your data at either the same rate or at a faster or slower rate. This is often referred to as an "elastic" register. You can easily expand them so that one 40105 dumps its output into the input of another 40105, other register or memory. And you can expand two CMOS 40105 registers to make an 8 bits x 16 words FIFO register, and four 40105 to make a 16 bits x 16 words FIFO register, etc.

Most circuit designers do not need a FIFO register (First-In, First-Out register) every day. However, when you need one, you either must use an excellent FIFO register like the 40105 or at least 3 other ICs and a lot of extra wiring to perform the same FIFO register function. It pays to have an ample supply of FIFO registers in your parts bins.
